Guide to Ice Dams

Ice Dam Formation Causes

1. Heavy Snow on Roof

2. Poor Insulation

3. Poor Venting

4. Water Freezing in Gutters

5. Changing Weather Conditions

Prevention Techniques

1. Roof Raking

Go to your local Minnesota Hardware store and ask somebody about roof raking and how its done.

2. Check Insulation.

If you do not have adequate insulation in your house, not only will you have higher energy costs than needed, but also will have lots of heat loss coming through your roof. This will likely lead to Snow melting and re-freezing. If you think you may have inadequate insulation you may want to have that looked into.

3. Check Ventilation

Even if you have the adequate insulation, if your attic is not venting properly you will likely have problems. Check to see if it is venting properly by going up there on a cold day and making sure it is not that much warmer than the outside temperature. If its warm check the following….

Is there venting to allow air to pass through the roof, soffit and sides of home? Is there insulation covering the soffit openings? Is there snow covering the roof vents?

4. Keep your gutters flowing.

Since your roof will warm up with any sun in the winter, it will typically melt snow into the gutters. In some causes you will need to install a heat tape system that will keep the gutters free-flowing in the cold weather. A professional grade system installed by a local company may be the best option. If one of these systems is installed you should probably not roof rake because it may damage the cables.

5. Watch your roof

Sometimes the winter conditions are just changing to rapidly to control ice build up. Heavy snow, warm sun than below zero temps. When this happens its important to keep a close eye on roof dams and ice formation. If you have followed all the steps in this short guide you should not have anything to worry about in most cases.

Minnesota Gutter Protection Reviews

Written By: CopperSmith Gutter | Minnesota Seamless Gutters, Minneapolis Copper Gutters Contractor | Published On: 9th February 2011

There are many different types of of leaf protection options that you can equip your gutters with to protect them from falling leaves and other debris. It is important to understand that not all houses are the same, and different products will be needed in some cases.

Minnesota’s Changing Seasons mean trouble for gutters and homeowners.

First off, just the fact alone that you are ready this blog, means you are doing the necessarydue diligence in finding the right leaf protection system for your home. We all know Minnesota has some crazy seasons which is why most homeowners here are quick to question quality and installation techniques. I have laid out the options for you the consumer. Our company has been striving for perfection in the arena of Gutter Protection for years, and we pride ourselves on matching customers homes, budgets, tree type and expectations with the right product for them.

Option 1 – Do nothing. Because of the costs of gutter covers some homeowners will elect to not do anything about the problem. This means you will either have to do extensive gutter cleaning, at least 3-4 times a year, or risk serious home damage from clogged gutters leaving water backing up into soffits, fascia and interior walls.

Option 2 – Install a Steel Powder Coated Mesh Screen. Although this product will likely collect seeds, small leaves and other debris over the course of a year, it will also keep you from having to clean the gutters 3-4 times a year. If budget is a huge concern we highly recommendthat you use this product. The upfront costs just simply make sense. If it reduces the time you spend on a ladder, it will pay for itself over time. Just remember when you are buying this product you are not really saving money. Instead your spending less, on a product that will perform less. Lots of times I will recommend this product if homeowners feel they will not be living at the house for more than a few years.

A gutter hood that can handle the water.

Option 3 – Install a Gutter Cap. Not all gutter caps are created equal. Most caps work of the principle of water adhesion. Although this is a very effective way to keep the water in your gutters and leaves out, it has a tendency to overflow on heavy rains. In recent years we have started to see increase in homeowners desires to not clean gutters anymore. If you want a lifetime product, its going to need to be the “Hood Style”. Since we found this product its basically all we sell to the homeowner looking for the best. Its called Gutter Cap Stone Coat and it really is the most premier gutter protection system available today. It has all the great qualities of the standard hood, yet, not of the traditional negative qualities. First off, the roof granules on the leaf protection slow the water! This means you will have hardly any water missing your gutters. Second off, no paint fading and it looks great!
